How to Choose the Right Door Handles
Choosing door handles is straightforward once you break it down into a few simple steps. This guide will walk you through the decisions so you can choose the right setup for your doors.
Explore our full range of door handles here.
Step 1: Choose Your Style and Finish
Start by choosing the look you want. This is usually the easiest step.
- Choose your preferred style (traditional, modern, heritage)
- Select your finish (e.g. Antique Brass, Satin Brass, Matte Black, Chrome, Nickel)
For best results, stick to the same brand across your project, as finishes can vary between brands and even between product ranges.
Step 2: Choose the Function You Need
This determines how the handle will work.
Passage (Non-locking)
- Hallways
- Living areas
Privacy (Locking from inside)
- Bathrooms
- Bedrooms
We recommend replacing the latch for privacy handles, as privacy latches vary between brands and are not as standard as tubular latches.
- A privacy latch
- Or a tubular latch with a separate privacy bolt
Dummy (Fixed Handle)
- Wardrobes
- Cupboards
- French or double doors (non-functioning side)
For double doors, the main door will require either a passage set or a locking set, depending on whether the door is internal or external.
Entrance / Keyed
Used for external doors.
Euro Style (Most Common)
- Requires a Euro lock (mortice lock)
- Requires a Euro cylinder
Traditional Keyhole
- Uses a 3 or 5 lever sash lock
Browse our entrance door handle range. Once you choose a handle style, you can then select the entrance / euro / locking function on the product page.
Step 3: Latches and Locks
New Doors
- A 60mm backset is standard in most cases
- You will need a latch or lock depending on your handle type
If you're unsure what backset size you need, refer to our How to Measure Your Backset Guide.
Replacing Existing Handles
You can either reuse or replace your existing hardware.
Reuse Existing Latch or Lock
- Check spindle size (usually 7.6mm – 8mm)
- Check that your latch or lock is functioning well
Replace Latch or Lock
- To match finishes
- If worn or not functioning well
- To ensure compatibility with your new handles
Important: Latches and locks include the faceplate and striker. These are not included with handles.
- Different handles and locks have different spring strengths
- If mismatched, the handle may feel loose or too tight
If this occurs, switch to the latch or lock designed for your handle.
Step 4: Check Your Door Preparation
Backset
- 60mm (standard)
- 70mm
- 44mm (common on French doors, but not always)
Some French doors may still use a 60mm backset, so always measure to confirm.
Hole Size
Some newer homes have a 54mm hole drilled into the door.
This is not standard for all handles and requires special consideration.
If You Have a 54mm Hole
1. Plate must cover the hole
- The plate must be wider than 54mm
Long plate handles are suitable if the plate is wide enough.
2. Handle must attach properly
You need a handle designed to work with:
- Through fixings (tie bolts / male-female screws)
- Some round handles will not work if they use face-fix screws only
- Some include adaptor plates
- Check product details for compatibility
Spindle Size
Most handles use a 7.6mm – 8mm square spindle. Always check product details to confirm compatibility.
Step 5: Finishes
Door hardware is available in a wide range of finishes, including Antique Brass, Polished Brass, Satin Brass, Matte Black, Chrome, Nickel and more.
While finishes may look similar, they can vary between brands and even between product ranges.
- Antique and aged finishes often have natural variation
- Polished finishes are more consistent
- Matte finishes can vary slightly in tone
For the most consistent result, we recommend using the same brand across your project. If mixing brands, allow for slight variation.
Step 6: Quick Checklist Before You Buy
