Doorbells
The doorbell is one of the often overlooked finishes on a new or renovated home but it really shouldn’t be. A doorbell is as much a part of the general character of your home as anything else and, what’s more, it’s usually the first thing that your visitors experience when they come to your home. Our selection of doorbells includes a wide variety of styles, colours and materials, ideally suited to anyone looking to replace their finishes and accents as close to the original styling of their home as possible. We specialise in sourcing antique reproduction styles that suit Australian Federation styles, Art Deco styles, Victorian styles and many more.
Along with our selection of doorbells, you’ll also find a range of other door hardware including handles, hinges and locks. Choose from vintage inspired designs to give your home a bit of character or rely on the RestorationOnline collection and team to find you exactly the type and style you need to complete a restoration project. For example, if you’re looking to update an old shop front but want to keep the heritage look and feel, then consider our collection of ships bells available in satin brass, antique brass and matte black. Service counter bells include our collection of stunning handbells available in polished brass and ornate polish nickel styles.
Returning to our front doorbells, we also have a range of vintage inspired and ornately detailed manual doorbells. Finishing tones and textures include antique copper, black and polished brass. For a more contemporary look and feel, choose from our chrome finish manual doorbells with retro, mid-century styling. In fact, if you’re looking for the best locks and latches and general hardware for a beachfront property, consider choosing chrome for all of your external materials. Chrome is naturally hardy and will weather well as it is naturally resistant to tarnishing.
Our attention to detail ensures that we have a style of doorbell and doorbell buttons that you’ll love in a texture or material finish that you’re looking for. Other finishing looks include polished nickel, satin chrome and wood. Choose from traditional styles as well as reimagined looks based on traditional styles which give you a taste of the aesthetic with a little modern finish for easier installation and long-lasting durability.
What is a mechanical doorbell?
A mechanical doorbell uses a mechanical chime to create its signature sound. Within the doorbell mechanism itself there will be a mechanical hammer and a little bell. When the doorbell button is depressed or the manual winder is turned, the hammer moves inside the mechanism to create that particular ‘ding-dong’ sound. Electronic doorbells use a pre-recorded sound that is piped through speakers when the doorbell has been activated.
Which is best for your project? Well, that depends on the look and feel that you’re ultimately searching for. As with any restoration, renovation or new build project, you will have decided early in the design phase what sort of overall design theme you are aiming for. If this was a Bohemian style beach shack, then keeping the finishes clean and simple but with just a touch of detail might mean choosing from our Victorian inspired mechanical doorbell range. These pieces are heavily detailed but relatively small and will look fantastic against plain coastal colours at the front of your property.
Mechanical doorbells are easy to install compared to electronic doorbells which will require knowledge and safe handling of electrical wires. This also makes them great for saving on costs as they’re DIY friendly.
