Tradco Light Switches
Tradco Hardware is one of our most popular selling brands on Restoration Online. Supply restoration hardware for nearly 40 years, their range of products is designed specifically to provide traditional architectural hardware options for Australian homes. Each item is crafted to be a replica of the original product so that it fits seamlessly into traditional and heritage homes.
The Tradco range of light switches are no exception. Using quality HPM mechanisms, these light switches and power points are designed to complement homes of all Australian eras, including Federation, Edwardian, Art Deco, Bungalow, Victorian and even into more contemporary Hamptons and Industrial styles. The range of finishes available means you will find a light switch that will suit any style and colour scheme. No more ugly white plastic switches – choose a much more elegant option from the Tradco range.
What are the different kind of light switches?
Tradco offer two main types of switches – rectangular and round switches.
The rectangular traditional switches come in two sizes, a standard 115 x 72mm plate, or a smaller 82 x 30mm plate which is designed to be installed on the architrave or door frame. Each of these switches come in 1, 2, 3 or 4 gang options – this refers to the number of switches on the plate itself. For rooms with a single light, you may only want a 1 gang switch; for multiple lights or rooms with both lights and fans, the 3 or 4 gang plates may be more suitable.
You also have the option of choosing from a traditional style toggle switch, or a more modern rocker switch. These options allow you to create the exact look you are going for. You’ll notice that on each switch page there is also a list of various accessories and mechanisms you can add on. These include USB ports, TV sockets, dimmer knobs, fan controllers, data sockets and telephone sockets. These mechanisms can simply be swapped out for the toggle or rocker switch. Matching traditional power points are available, and you can choose from single or double options.
Tradco’s round range of switches are perfect for the classic heritage home. Available in all the classic finishes including polished brass, antique copper, antique brass, chrome, satin chrome and even matte black, these switches come in a few styles. There is the traditional domed option, the more angled Federation style, and the porcelain base option. All of these work in the same way.
The round switches offer dimmer and fan controller options. Keep in mind that a dimmer and a fan controller will also require a separate on/off switch. You can purchase mounting blocks with the appropriate number of holes (1-4) to keep your switches neatly installed together. They can also be simply installed directly into the wall. Round power points are available also.
Do I need an electrician to change a light switch?
Yes. We recommend a licensed electrician install light switches, even if you are just swapping from an old plastic one to a newer Tradco style. When it comes to jobs involving electrical wires, it is best left to the experts!
How do I choose a light switch?
Choosing light switches can be simple or complicated depending on the quantity you need, and the different mechanisms you need.
If you are building a new home, there may be limitations on the exact places your switches and power points can be installed. Your electrician can help you work out the quantity and types of switches you require. If you are simply upgrading existing light switches and power points that you need, then it is fairly straight forward. For mechanisms like fan controllers and tv sockets, it is best to check with your electrician and they can advise you on the best items to choose.
In terms of choosing the style you like, it really comes down to personal preference and whether there is a particular style that is more authentic to the era of your home. For example, for Federation homes, we’d recommend using the round Federation switches. However, if you prefer the look of the rectangular toggle switches, and the fact that they take up less space, these will still certainly fit in as they are very traditional in style.
For more traditional homes, you might want to choose finishes such as polished brass, antique copper and antique brass, to give your house an authentic feel appropriate to the era it was built in. If you prefer a more contemporary look, then Chrome, Satin Chrome and Matte Black might be options to consider.
The Tradco range of light switches are compliant with all Australian and NZ regulations. They use HPM mechanisms, which is one of the leading electrical brands in Australia, so you can be sure that the electrical components come from a reputable manufacturer. They have a 1 year warranty included for your peace of mind.
