Choosing Passage Latches for Lever Handles

Choosing Standard Latches

Please see below, but we know this can get a bit complicated. Feel free to phone us for friendly assistance or click here to contact us by email.

Firstly, select the function by clicking on the small images to the right of the main image on the product page.

After selecting your handle function (in this case Passage which is always the first image on the left), you will be asked a number of questions.

  1. Do you need a latch? (If you don't have an existing latch in the door you will need one for this handle to function)

    1. No, I have existing latches or I plan to purchase them separately - Select this option if you are replacing handles onto doors that have existing latches and you wish to retain them or you would like to purchase your latches separately.
    2. Yes, I need latches - Select this option if you are installing the handles onto a new door or if you wish to replace your existing latches. *You will be presented with Question 2.
  2. Are you installing this handle on a single or double door?

    1. Single - Select this answer if installing the handle on a single door. *A box will appear where you can select your latch.
    2. Double - Select this answer if installing the handle on a double door. *You will presented with Question 3.
  3. Are your doors rebated? - Rebated doors are double doors that overlap (meet) with a lip on the vertical edge.

    1. No - Select this option if your double doors are not rebated. See reference image. *A box will appear where you can select your latch.
    2. Yes - Select this option if your double doors are rebated. See reference image. *A box will appear where you can select your latch.

At this stage, you will need to choose between 60mm and 45mm backset latches.
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of where the handle will be installed. Please see the Measuring Your Backset page for more information (including images) on backsets.

Once you have selected the correct backset latch, you can add the handles and latches to you shopping cart.

Are there other (non-standard) latches available?

Yes. Tubular Latches are available in 45mm & 60mm (standard) and 70mm backsets.

To avoid confusion 70mm backset latches are not offered as an option when you buy any of our range of lever handles.
These are very unusual and would generally only be installed when replacing an existing 70mm backset latch.

Tubular latches are also available in both standard sprung, hard sprung and split cam versions. On each handle we have only provided the appropriate type of latch to be selected. If you are purchasing latches separately it is best to contact us by phone or email to determine the best type of latch for your application.

If you have an older door with a large mortice (hole) in the edge of the door (where an old lock used to be), you may want to use a “mortice lock” rather than filling the hole and installing the smaller tubular latch. Click to see our full range of mortice locks.
