Styles of Kitchen Handles

Choosing kitchen handles can seem overwhelming. Often when it comes to picking out kitchen knobs and handles, you’re on the last leg of your design and build phase – whether you’re building from the ground up or renovating and revamping existing spaces – so you’re on the home stretch and eager to see the final product.

If you’ve had a clear design vision from the start, then you’ll know roughly what period style you’re looking for:

  • Hampton-style: Choose from Hampton style classic hardware in matte black, expertly finished to deliver a crisp and signature aesthetic that works perfectly with provincial styling and white ceramic accents.

  • Federation: For Aussies seeking to unearth original Federation features in their kitchen and bathroom, we can help you source and select the ideal brass, bronze and gold knobs and lever door handles as close to the original designs as you can possibly get.

If you’re stuck trying to find a particular style, then shoot us a message and ask for our help. We know our catalogue intimately and can help you narrow your focus to only the most relevant designs we have available.

Alternatively, you can let inspiration guide you and scroll through our thousands of products online to uncover drawer handles and kitchen & cabinet pull handles across a vast selection of styles and periods.

How to Choose Kitchen Door Handles

Being one of the most functional areas of your home, it’s not enough for your kitchen to only look amazing – it has to work well, too. The last thing you want to do is install kitchen door handles that either don’t work in your space or take up too much room, are unwieldy to use or the wrong size for your doors.

Ordering from Restoration Online is not only simple, but also offers a far more personalised experience with a far greater selection to choose from.

Not only can we answer any questions about our existing product range, but we’ll also point you in the direction of a trusted supplier if we don’t have exactly what you’re looking for. We can also arrange for modifications to existing products if this helps fit your design brief more closely.

When it comes to ordering your kitchen door handles from us, one of our knowledgeable staff members will take a look over your final order before it’s shipped to ensure you have everything you need. Saving you time and aggravation before your order arrives ensures you enjoy not only the stunning new design you have purchased, but can immediately install your new kitchen handles and marvel at your transformed space.

Tip: Sometimes choosing to match your tapware with your kitchen handles can create a subtle but noticeable sense of synergy throughout your space, drawing all of the detailed finishers into a single type and design.

Revamp Your Kitchen Cupboard Handles

Revamping your kitchen with new handles can totally change the look and feel of your home for a lot less than costly renovations.

Often updated or period style kitchen cupboard handles can help to redefine suddenly lacklustre spaces. This is particularly true when you have timber fittings which are generally timeless. By changing up your kitchen cupboard handles, you can accent your space with a new contemporary look and feel of timeless elegance. This is also a great cheat for anyone looking to sell their home without spending thousands on remodelling beforehand.

Order your kitchen cupboard handles online from us and choose from thousands of contemporary and vintage reproductions. We arrange quick delivery directly to your project site.

How to Install Kitchen Cabinet Handles

Replacing your kitchen cabinet handles is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to give your kitchen a facelift, and the good news is that it is simple enough to do yourself.

If you’re using the same sized cabinet handles as your existing ones, you can replace them easily by using the original holes. If you are installing brand new cabinet handles or want to change the position, you’ll need to work out where you want the handles to go.

You may want to try out a few different positions first by sticking the handle on using Blu Tack to see what works best. When it comes to drilling the new holes, you can buy templates that have different hole options. This will help you to mark out the correct spot and ensure that all your handles or knobs line up. You can also buy backplates to put over any old holes that you are no longer using.

Once you have marked out the holes with a pencil, you can drill a hole all the way through the door and screw in the new handles. You may want to use a thread sealant to stop the screw coming loose, and if you are using cabinet knobs you may want to use super glue as well to stop the knobs from twisting.

How to Baby-proof Cabinets Without Handles

If you have babies or toddlers, it’s important to baby-proof your cabinets to keep your children safe. There are many different ways to do this:

  • You can buy easy-to-install adhesive magnetic safety locks that can be attached to the inside of your cabinet, and opened using a magnetic-based key. No drilling is required and as they can’t be seen from the outside, they won’t ruin the look of your cabinet.

  • You can also buy spring release latches that also go inside your cupboard. The cabinet doors will open a small way, and then you push down a lever to open them fully. They don’t require a key, but if older kids pull hard enough, they might be able to get them open themselves so they may not be as safe as you think.

  • You could put rubber bands around the cupboard door handles, but it doesn’t take kids long to figure out how to remove these!

  • You can also buy sliding cabinet locks which are more secure than using rubber bands, but as with the rubber bands they can be seen from the outside of your cabinet, so they don’t look very attractive.

Even if you are using one of these baby-proofing methods, it is best not to keep heavy items, chemicals, knives or any precious crockery in your lower cabinets, so that they are kept out of your child’s reach.

Where to Place Handles on Cabinets

Once you’ve decided on the type of cabinet handles you will be using, you then need to work out exactly where to place them on your cabinet.

Whether you are using cabinet pulls, knobs or handles or a combination of all three, they’ll need to be placed somewhere on the opposite side to the door hinges. The exact placement, though, will come down to your personal preference.

Traditionally knobs were generally placed on the lower corner of the cabinet door, especially for wall cabinets but these days there are many variations:

  • For taller cabinets, such as a pantry door handle, you may want to vertically centre the knob or handle as long as it is still within easy reach.

  • For base kitchen cabinets, it is common for the kitchen handles or knobs to be placed on the upper corner so that you don’t need to bend down too far to reach them.

Even though cabinet handles can be decorative, they also need to be functional so as well as looking good, you’ll want to make sure they are positioned in an easy place for people to use. For more information, get in touch with our team today.
