Restoring an original doorway? A traditional hinge can carry the character of your handles through to the door's edge. For a simpler look, choose a clean profile and a finish that sits comfortably with the rest of your hardware.

Choose a hinge to suit the way your door works

  • For internal doors: loose-pin hinges let you remove the pin when taking a door off for painting or moving furniture. They are a practical starting point for ordinary internal timber doors.
  • For external doors: start with fixed-pin hinges, which do not have an easily removable pin. Choose the material and size for the door's weight and exposure.
  • For heavier doors: ball-bearing hinges help the door move smoothly by reducing friction. Match the hinge specification to the door rather than choosing on appearance alone.
  • To open past an architrave or clear a wall: explore parliament hinges. Their extra projection helps the door swing clear. Our parliament hinge calculator helps you work out the clearance required.
  • For a fitting without a traditional hinge recess: easy-fit hinges offer a surface-fitting option for suitable internal doors.
  • When the door needs to lift off: browse lift-off hinges. Allow room above the door for removal and choose the correct handing.

Bring the doorway together

Choose your hinges alongside your door handles and door stops for a coordinated finish. An exact finish match is not essential: similar colour and sheen work well together, and our team can help find the closest visual match across different ranges.

Door hinge FAQs

You’ll need at least two hinges per door, and we recommend three for heavy doors. Our hinges are generally not weight rated, so it’s best to err on the cautious side. Your installer can help confirm the right hinge size and number for your door’s weight and construction.

The open width is measured across both leaves with the hinge laid flat, including the central barrel. Leaf width measures one leaf, excluding the barrel. Compare like-for-like measurements when replacing existing hinges.

Matching the height and open width is a good start, but also compare leaf thickness and screw-hole positions. These can differ between hinges of the same nominal size. Photos and measurements of your existing hinge help our team narrow down the options.

Dummy hinges add a decorative detail to a door; they do not support it. Use working hinges to hang the door, with dummy hinges added for the look you want.
