Different Types of Hinges
Selecting the type of hinge needed can be daunting as there are so many factors to consider. We are here to help make this process easy for you and to be able to walk you through the types of hinges available to you and in what instance you would use them.
Fixed pin hinges are one of the most commonly used and you will see these on external doors. As the name suggests, the pin inside these is fixed and is not able to be removed. Therefore, they are best to be used externally so there is no way the pin, then the door be removed, and it is secure. In saying this, they can also be used on internal doors if you wish, there are just better options for use in these cases.
Another variation of this style is the ball bearing hinges, and whilst they are still a fixed pin hinge, offer key difference in the way they work. Rather than a standard metal spine they are filled with ball bearings. This offers a much smoother movement and in turn, the spine must be bigger to hold the bearings. This means they are more heavy duty than a standard fixed pin hinge and are perfect for use on heavier doors.
Loose pin hinges will be the perfect option for use internally as they have a removable pin that is not fixed in place. Of course, this means they should never be used externally, as if anyone was to get into your home, they could remove your doors to take larger items. When used internally they offer the benefit of making removal of the door easy in case you would like to re paint, do maintenance etc.
Further to this style there is also the option of lift off hinges, and they work similar to loose pin but not quite the same. They do not have a pin like other hinges and the two halves that insert into each other, making them perfect for bathrooms. As if there is an emergency the door can be lifted off with ease and there are no pins or screws to removed to do so. However, with installation there needs to be around a 10mm gap inside the door frame at the top to allow the door to be lifted up, and then out.
Finally, if you have French doors or commonly known as double doors, you will be needing either a parliament hinge or a broad butt hinge. Made specifically for the use on these doors as they allow for the door to open all the way around the door frame and lay almost flat along the wall. This means when the doors are fully open, they can be moved out of the way and not only open 90 degrees like most other doors. Bother styles will work in the same way but the designs are different. As you will see the parliament is more of a H shape and the broad butt look standard. The main thing to keep in mind is if the doors are very heavy, you will more than likely need the broad butt. This is due to the fact they do not have the cut outs which make them more heavy duty.
With any hinge you will want to select the correct size, and this is essential for the hinge to work correctly for years to come and prevent any sagging by pressure being placed on the pin. When it comes to most hinges you will need to just measure the width of the door and select a hinge with a leaf size slightly smaller than the door. This will allow the door to sit as close as possible to the frame to stop the sagging issues and added pressure to the pin when in use.
For hinges used on a French door, this can be a little trickier as you do not want it to be too small and not reach around the frame correctly. However, you also do not want it to be too large which will cause a bigger gap between the frame and the door than needed and put pressure on the pin. We have a helpful link how to measure the right size for you here.
