It is shocking to think that around 50 children fall from windows or balconies in Australia every year. Many of them suffer severe injuries which, in some cases, are fatal.
To protect all children, the Strata Schemes Management Act 1996 (NSW) was amended to state that all strata-managed residential buildings must install safety devices on specific windows - restricting opening to 12.5cm. The owners corporation is responsible (and liable) to ensure that these requirements are met.
Where the internal floor is more than 2m above the ground outside, and the window is within the child's reach (less than 1.7m above the floor), the law states that these windows must be secured.
The 13th of March 2018 is the final deadline for the requirments of the Strata Schemes Management Act 1996 (NSW). By law, owners corporations in NSW must install child safety window locks on all above ground windows. Non-compliance by the 2018 deadline could result in fines.
These window restrictors make it easy to comply with these regulations.
These child safety window locks will still allow your residents to open their windows, but give them confidence knowing that these devices, when engaged, can protect their children from a severe fall.
